The significance of Manning’s leaks are not in doubt—it was the largest release of classified information in US history revealing secret drone strikes, abusive conditions in Guantánamo and widespread corruption. They are credited in part for sparking the Arab Spring. However, none of the information leaked was classified as top secret. The charge of 'aiding the enemy'—which carries a life sentence—is extreme at best and punitive at worst.
