TRAC Incident Report: Islamic State (IS) Militants Targeted an Iraqi Armed Forces Vehicle with an IED, in Al-Fayda (Faidah) Village, South of Ar-Rutba, Anbar Province, Iraq – 1 April 2023 Even though Uranium cannot be used to make bombs as it is not a natural explosive, it is a very heavy metal that can be used as an abundant source of concentrated energy. One kilogram of uranium-235, if led through complete fission, can release chemical energy equivalent to burning 1.5 million kilograms of coal. That explosive ability to store and release energy has allowed the element to be used in power generation and in nuclear weapons such as the atomic bomb. As for Phosphate, IS has always its eyes set on the Phosphate mines since the days of the Caliphate. Back in December 2014, IS was apparently transferring Phosphate from mines in Iraq to Raqqa to make explosives. Not only that, the group has previously controlled the phosphate processing plant in al-Qaim. TRAC Incident Report: Islamic State derail Syrian regime train carrying phosphate from Khunayfis via an explosive device in the Homs countryside, Syria- 21 July 2019 Considering both the elements, TRAC is certain IS is planning to make a radiological weapon that combines radioactive material with conventional explosives and it is speculated that the device includes Uranium and Phosphate. This is further indication that IS is going to establish Caliphate 2.0 in the near future.
