The Black Muslim Movement was founded in 1930 and led by Elijah Muhammad from 1934 until his death in 1975. The Movement expanded in the 1950s as the Civil Rights Movement began to take root, and when the charismatic Malcolm X became one of its spokesmen. With the suspension of Malcolm X from the Movement and his assassination in 1965, the Black Panthers filled the vacuum for militant leadership.
