OverviewIn 1992, the Republic of Albania was established following the abolishment of the forty-six year communist rule. From 1944 until 1992, Albania was under communist rule aligning itself to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.) until 1960 and later to China in 1978. A majority of the 3.2 million population are ethnic Albanians while the majority religion is Islam. Following its closed market and isolationist market tendencies during the communist period, the economy remains fragile with some improvement in 2011.
