OverviewAlgeria gained independence from the French in 1962. Algeria followed a socialist model since independence but has gradually liberalized its markets since the mid-1990s; however, there has been a reversal of this trend recently. The mainstay of the economy is the energy sector, especially hydrocarbons, having the 8th largest reserves and the world’s 4th largest exporter of natural gas, the sector has provided growth and revenue for Algeria.
