OverviewNiger gained independence in 1960 from the French. Eighty percent of the country‚Äôs 16 million population are Sunni Muslim while the rest follow Christianity and indigenous beliefs. Niger is one of the poorest and under developed countries on the world with a high reliance on foreign aid although it is one of the largest producers of uranium.  Large portions of the country consist of the Sahara Desert.  Niger is hoping that exploration efforts in oil and gold will provide an economic boost, although no production has occurred to date.  Photo: Niamey, Niger.
