Jaysh al-Islam (formerly Liwa al-Islam)

Jaysh al-Islam, a member of the Islamic Front, is composed of approximately forty-five factions of the Free Syrian Army (FSA). The organization was formed on September 29, 2013. At its conception, its members ranged from "moderate" rebels to hardline Salafist militants and over thirty of its brigades had already been operating under the auspices of Liwa al-Islam, a group with branding from the FSA. Zahran Alloush, the son of a Saudi member of the 'ulama, commanded the group and is the current commander of Jaysh al-Islam.
