OverviewYemen as it is today was formed in 1990 with the unification of North and South Yemen, of which the North gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1918 and South witnessed the withdrawal of the British in 1967. Yemen’s population of around 24 million are dependent on fast depleting oil reserves. The government has taken some measures to diversify the economy but much more needs to be done.
